Marine coatings are protective, waterproof layers applied to surfaces that are immersed into or otherwise exposed to water. This may be freshwater, saltwater, or brackish water.
Marine paints and coatings are used on watercraft including boats, ferries, tinnies, yachts, ships, canoes, kayaks, tankers;, jettys, docks, and waterside fixtures (railings, etc),; and on larger marine structures like offshore oil rigs.
Topside paints are used on surfaces that remain above the waterline and are exposed to harsh sunlight and other weather, while paints for use below the waterline need to protect the integrity of the craft while also preventing the buildup of marine-based microorganisms.
Marine paints must be of high performance, and generally incorporate colour retention and UV resistance. They are also durable, flexible, and easy to apply. They need to dry quickly and retain their finish in harsh conditions effectively.
